"5. Officers quarters - Senior officers and those with families were assigned private quarters. Families brought a welcome relief from the drudgery of military life. If the officer had servants, he had to provide their living quarters. A married captain with a family might have to give up quarters to a newly arrived single, single officer. This common practice was known as "Ranking out." All that remains is the chimney.
