The name of Wells takes it's name from the springs which are in the grounds of the Bishop's Palace next to the cathedral.
Wells cathedral is of Gothic design. The Great West Front Wall began in 1239, with it's hundreds of carved statues of Saints, missionaries, bishops and kings.

The Cathedral dominates the small city, and thousands of visitors make the pilgrimage every year. Unlike some English cathedrals, there is no admittance charge but have suggested donations boxes.
