Forest Hill is a large native bush that is left on this significant limestone outcrop. It has provided recreation in a natural setting in a region that has lost most of its original forest cover due to farming.

Today it is administered by the Department of Conservation and that agency has developed a booklet for school children to discover and understand the native forest and birds. (visit link)

The track's name is a reference to Derek Turnball who lived in the area and competed in marathons and other running events. Turnball used this walking track to train on. As The Southland Times wrote: "In May [2009]the Derek Turnbull walkway will be unveiled, honouring the Tussock Creek farmer dubbed the 'fastest old man in the world', who died in 2006 after an athletics career that included 25 world records and 28 gold medals at world veterans' championships."
