Bowes Castle is situated alongside the A66 on the eastern edge of Stainmoor. There was a Roman fort on the site before the castle was built.

The castle stands in the north-west corner of the Roman fort of Lavatris. Both the castle and the fort controlled the east to west road across the wild expanses of Stainmoor. This road was the main road from York to Carlisle.
The present keep was probably built between 1171 and 1187. The castle was besieged by the Scottish during 1174. Robert the Bruce caused further damaged in the area between 1314 and 1322. During 1322 the local Lords besieged the castle and turned out the Governor. By 1341 the castle was in poor repair and of little use. Most of the stonework was dismantled for re-used during the 17th century.
