The Odd Fellows Cemetery in Clinton, MS was dedicated in 1857, but burials date back as early as 1830. It was also at this time that the members of the order in Clinton erected a lodge. (It is believed that the lodge is no longer in existence.) The following is an excerpt from the "Hinds County Gazette" April 29, 1857 recounting the festivities surrounding the dedication of the lodge and cemetery. "The ceremonies closed at the church, the procession was again formed, and proceeded a short distance from the village (Clinton) to the grounds set apart for "Odd Fellows' Rest." Arrived at the spot, the faternity with measured tread, and with solemn strains from the Band, encircled the enclosure. Then, in the stillness of that forest "Rest," proceeded to the beautifully appropriate ceremonies of consecration conducted by Judge Shackleford and Rev. C. Partish and their worthy Assistants, in conformity with the ancient usages of the Order, and in the presence of citizens, ladies and gentlemen. Proclamation having been made that this spot was consecrated forever, as a burying ground for Odd-Fellows and their Friends . . . ."

It is noted that in 1851, when the IOOF became the first faternity to include men and women, Grand Sire Robert Griffin appointed 3 members to prepare a ritual for the degree of Rebekah. One of the 3 members appointed was "Martin from Mississippi."
