The six floor Gothic tower of the city gate was built around the begining of the 15th century on a square foundation. Originally, it was a two story structure, with its passage roofed by a pointed Gothic arch. During the first quarter of the 17th century, the gate was updated in the Renaissance style, a third floor was added in an octogan shape.
Damaged during the besiege of the castle by Katzianer, the gate in 1543 – 1549 was reconstructed, erected higher and fortified by the semicilcular barbican with a lower front bastion. A drawbridge served as the entrance. Due to Turkish threat, further fortification to the gate was necesary at the begining of the 16th century. The fortification was destroyed in 1857. At the top of the tower a Renaissance mechanical clock was installed and in 1934 changed to an electric clock. A Latin inscription on the tower says: „Unless the Lord guards the City, the watchman stays awake in vain“. At present, the City tower is open to the public during the summertime.
Nothing at all has been preserved of the Upper „Water“ City tower standing in the upper part of the main square. Graphic works from the first half of the 19th. Century capture its image after the fortification was removed in 1761 and before it was destroyed in 1873.

Dnešná Mestská veža sa pôvodne nazývala Dolná brána ci Turecká veža. Bola súcastou opevnenia mesta - múru, ktorý obkolesoval mesto a napájal sa na hradné múry. Tvoril tak s hradom jeden fortifikacný komplex. Do stredovekého mesta bolo možné vstúpit dvoma bránami: Hornou, nazývanou tiež Vodná brána, a Dolnou. Horná brána stála pri dnešnom hoteli Tatra, no v 18. storocí musela ustúpit rozširujúcemu sa mestu, tak ako i ostatné múry mestských hradieb. Z pôvodného stredovekého opevnenia sa zachovala iba Turecká veža a kúsok fortifikacného múru za farským kostolom.
Vo vrchole veže bol celé stárocia umiestnený renesancný hodinový stroj, ktorý bol v roku 1934 vymenený za elektrický. Pôvodné renesancné hodiny, ešte stále funkcné, je možné vidiet v expozícii Katovho domu na Matúšovej ulici. Na hodinovom stroji bola, tak ako na mnohých starobylých hodinách, hodinová rucicka dlhšia ako minútová. Bolo to preto, lebo ludia kedysi nepotrebovali pocas dna vediet presný cas, iba približnú hodinu.
Ako dostala Turecká veža svoje pomenovanie?
V 17. storocí žilo Slovensko pod tureckou nadvládou, no Trencín už viac ako jedno storocie odolával tureckému nebezpecenstvu. V roku 1663 sa to však zmenilo. Ráno 1. októbra dostali Trencania od predsunutých stráží pri Mníchovej Lehote správu, že Turci vypálili dedinu Orvište pri Pieštanoch a obrátili sa na Nové Zámky. Trencania si boli presvedcení, že sú v bezpecí, a tak otvorili brány mesta a vyšli do okolitých polí za prácou. Onedlho sa však zjavili na obzore turecké vojská v pocte 5000 mužov. Obišli stráže a vpadli do mesta od Trencianskeho Jastrabia. Ludia boli takí prekvapení, že nestacili zavriet bránu v šiancoch, a tak Turci spustošili mestský majer. Zabili 300 ludí a mnohých zajali. Trenciansky hrad sa im ale dobyt nepodarilo. A tak sa potvrdila pravdivost citátu z Knihy žalmov, ktorý je vytesaný nad bránou veže: "Ak Pán nechráni mesto, márne bdie ten, kto ho stráži. Baránok Boží, ktorý snímaš hriechy sveta, zmiluj sa nad nami."
