The arch was constructed in 1913 as the doorway to the Australia Mutual Provident Society building in Elizabeth St Hobart.
When that building was demolished AMP donated the arch to the Botanical Gardens. The dates now on the archway now show the founding of the Botanical Gardens in 1818 and the re-erection of the arch in 1968.
