The Roundhouse is the oldest remaining building in Western Australia and was used as a gaol (Australian spelling!), and a police lockup. It narrowly avoided demolition but is now a part of the Arthur's Head Reserve.

A visit to The Roundhouse can include an inside look at what remains of cells for prisoners. A set of stocks with provision for the hands to be chained together and the head held firm whilst in a generally uncomfortable position is on display. Some cells outline the penal history of the original settlement or contain mockups of what a prisoner might have been confined to.
The local council has provided a short history on (

But there is more to The Roundhouse. It is located on Arthur's Head which is a limestone promontory and also contained a cannon and falling ball which declared "one o'clock" for port shipping (and time was so essential for navigational purposes), but don't set your watch by the daily firings and fall of the ball nowadays!
Then further there is a tunnel almost underneath The Roundhouse originally built for whalers and had additions as late as World War 2.
So there is more than just a prison at this waymark...
