[FR] En 1920, Jeanne d’Arc a été canonisée par l’Eglise catholique et déclarée héroïne nationale par le Parlement français. C’est à la fois une église pour honorer Sainte Jeanne d’Arc, dont la fête religieuse est le 30 mai, et un mémorial civil pour commémorer l’héroïne célèbrée par la France le deuxième dimanche du mois de mai. A Rouen, les fêtes Jeanne d’Arc ont lieu le dimanche le plus proche du 30 mai.
L’église est coiffée d’une haute toiture trapézoïdale en ardoises. Elle se prolonge par une galerie-mémorial où est inscrite une citation d’André Malraux. Près de l’église, la grande croix marque l’emplacement du bûcher et la statue de Jeanne est adossée à l’église, face au lieu de son supplice.
L’intérieur de l’édifice réserve une surprise. On y a en effet placé de splendides vitraux du XVIe siècle provenant de l’église Saint-Vincent, détruite pendant la guerre, qui avaient été déposés en 1939. Ils sont parfaitement mis en valeur par l’architecture dépouillée de l’église à laquelle ils apportent une resplendissante touche de couleur.
[EN] In 1920, Joan Of Arc was canonised by the Catholic Church and declared a national heroine by the French Parliament. The church is dedicated to St. Joan, whose feast day is on 30th May and the civil monument commemorates the national heroine who is celebrated by France on the second Sunday in May. In Rouen, the Fête Jeanne d'Arc is held every year on the Sunday closest to 30 May.
The church is topped with a tall trapezoidal roof covered in slate. An extension of this roof also shelters the memorial bearing André Malraux's famous homage to St Joan. Near the church, a tall cross marks the spot of St Joan's burning and a statue of St Joan stands next to the church facing this spot.
The church's interior contains a surprise: the splendid 16th century stained-glass windows from St. Vincent's Church, which was destroyed during the World War II. Luckily, the stained glass had been put in safe storage in 1939. Today, these windows are now magnificently offset by the church's modern yet sparse architecture, to which they add a resplendent touch of colour.
