Sheridan was a ranching town with a booming past with the expansion of railroads to the city. The city served as the commercial center for the grown cattle ranching industry in the 1880s. The city being the largest in the area had an air of sophistication from its start. The city's historic Sheridan Inn was operated by Buffalo Bill Cody, was described as the finest hotel between Chicago and San Fransisco when it opened 1893. The main street keeps it old west feel with many of storefront buildings dating to the late 1800's. Trail End, now a state historic site, was a mansion built for cattleman, John B. Kendrick, who served as Wyoming's Governor and as a U.S. Senator.
A stroll down Sheridan's Main Street, which is listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places and a short drive to some of the nearby sites will bring one back to simpler times.
