Venice is built on an Island below sea level. A series of canals and bridges connect the city in much the same way that another city would have streets. A Gondola or Water Taxi will get you around the city.
Of the Top Ten sites listed in 1000 Places to see before you die, our favorite was The Basilica de San Marco. A tour is available of the ornate Cathederal.
I concur with the author that a Gondola ride is a "Must Do" on your visit to Venice.
