Australia was known about for many years before European settlement, but it presented an uninviting and unforgiving appearance. Offshore reefs and islands presented navigational hazards and many vessels foundered.
The most famous of these was the "Batavia" of which a section of the stern has been raised and conserved and is now mounted in a constant temperature, constant humidity environment to preserve it for years to come. (You can read Mike Dash "Batavia's Graveyard - the true story of the mad heretic who led history's bloodiest mutiny" Phoenix 2003 paperback.)
The museum contains many examples of items recovered from the sea from coins to pottery through to a nearly complete marine steam engine which had spent over one hundred years underwater.
At the time of writing, entry was by donation.
