Gold! If you ever heard of gold fever and gold rushes and were enthused by what you heard, then a visit to the Perth Mint will be both instructive and entertaining.
Tours of the Mint including watching a gold pour are available for an admission charge. Free entry is available to the shop and cafeteria.
The Mint no longer refines gold at these premises, but several times a day, about $250,000 worth of gold is poured in a molten state from a crucible into a mould. This is carried out where the family can see the action and is a highlight of a mint tour. The "oohhs" and "ahhhs" when we visited and saw the pour testified of great interest.
You can also see samples of gold bullion, handle a surprisingly heavy ingot of gold and see some nuggets.
You can organize your own medallion with your own message on it to be struck and there is plenty of historical information.
Photography is restricted in the premises, surveillance cameras operate and security guards are ever present. They don't offer free samples either!
