The victorian goldfields had large numbers of Chinese miners. By 1856 there were many Chineese miners in the Beechworth district. Following the Buckland riots in 1857, the numbers of Chinese in Beechworth swelled. The Chinese formed their own community, within the town and had their own shops, Joss House & Temple.
The burning towers, customary o\for southern China, were built in 1857, and were used for burning paper prayers and meals for the deceased. The Altar in front of the burning towers was not built until 1833-4.
It is thought that about 2000 Chinese persons were buried here, but it was relatively common for bodies to be exhumed and sent back to China with relatives, for reburial.
