During high water in the spring and early summer, this is a typical plunge waterfall. But during low flow the river disappears into cracks and holes in the limestone rocks and emerges far below. The outflow canyon has massive limestone blocks teetering along the walls. During low water, all of the river may disappear below ground rather than flowing through the canyon.
The falls got its name from a natural rock bridge, under which the river flowed during low water, until it collapsed in July 1988.
