This beautiful mountain of perfection is a perfect volcanic cone. Seen from above it is clearly a complete circle of white snow capped volcanic peak lying in the centre of a larger circle of deep green forested bushland.
In 1881, a circular area with a radius of six miles (9.6 km) from the summit was protected as a Forest Reserve.
Surrounding these circles is the partly circular Taranaki Peninsula, a piece of land protruding into the deep blue Tasman sea. The peninsular appears a lighter shade of green, intensively-farmed dairy pasture reaching right up to the mostly-circular park boundary. The change in vegetation is sharply delineated in satellite images.
