Passionate Bushwalkers will appreciate this lookout as an encouragement to do a lovely and to some extent DEMANDING hike to a huge rock outcrop that offers tremendous views to the coastline, the Russel River Valley with the mountain range beyond in the South and even to the Tablelands. To the North one can see the densely overgrown ridge leading up to the summit of Bartle Frere.
You have to be prepared to be attacked by leeches. An easy way to deter most of them is by applying insect repellent to your shoes and ankles.
Up to date information whether the path is open and other useful hints for the area can be obtained at http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/projects/park/index.cgi?noback=1&parkid=239 and http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/parks_and_forests/find_a_park_or_forest/bartle_frere_trail_wooroonooran_national_park/#walking_options .
From Bruce Hwy turn off South of Miriwinni to Josephine Falls. From the parking area, there is a walking track leading up 3½km (approx. 2h) to Majuba Creek offering a basic tent site. Leave the water to your right and, after a short breather filling up WATER continue straight for a quite steep climb gaining over 500m in altitude. The clear defined path will then lead you left eventually approaching Broken Nose Lookout (approx. 2km / 2½h). Stunning views from here will be an appropriate reward for the tiring climb you have done. Be aware that there are NO RAILS securing the place – so practice CAUTION!
Going down be careful again and “watch your nose”!
Good hike, fine weather, and have fun!
