On November 6, 1869, the first intercollegiate football game was played in New Brunswick on College Field. The game was between Rutgers and Princeton, and Rutgers was victorious. The football games were held on College Field until 1938 when Neilson Field, it's current location, became the home of the team's stadium.
In recent years, the stadium has undergone a $102 million renovation to increase seating and viewing capacity. Boasting a capacity of 42,000, an expansion in 2008 increased the mezzanine seats by 1,000, and a current expansion will be adding another 1,000 seats to the north zone, and 12,000 seats to the south zone.
