Owain Glyndwr was the leader of a national revolt against English rule in Wales, beginning in 1400 with an attack on Ruthin's foreign colony from his stronghold near Corwen.
Proclaimed Prince of Wales by a Welsh parliament - the only one ever to receive such an honour - he gained control over most of the country, winning battles and capturing castles. He summoned several parliaments, held an alliance with France, Ireland and Scotland, and proposed an independent church and two universities for Wales.
Owain sustained the hopes of his nation for over fifteen years and his myth lived on even though he died in obscurity, having never accepted the pardon offered to him.
In succeeding centuries he has become a potent symbol of the Welsh spirit, and the father of modern Wales.'

HOME IS THE HERO
AFTER a four-year wait and the perils of a Chinese monsoon, a statue of Owain Glyndr costing £125,000 was finally unveiled yesterday.
A new memorial to Wales’ greatest historical leader was commissioned to replace a much-derided statue of the same man in Corwen.
And the new model did not disappoint as it was unveiled in the Denbighshire town yesterday morning.
The life-size bronze statue, which weighs just under a ton, stands four and a half metres high on its plinth, and is placed in the Dee Valley which gave him his name.
It depicts Glyndr on a battle charger rallying his people to the Welsh cause at the time of the hostilities in September 1400.
The unveiling very nearly did not take place – the original eight-ton granite plinth plunged 30ft down a ravine in Xiamen, China during a monsoon in June.
But the Trefor Quarry, near Pwllheli, stepped in with a replacement plinth to ensure Glyndr could be unveiled at last, with a more fitting Welsh stone.
The project was commissioned by the Corwen Partnership, an umbrella organisation representing both the public and private sectors.
Nigel Davies, chairman of the Corwen Partnership, said: “We are absolutely delighted that this stunning depiction of Glyndr is finally being installed in his home town.
“We believe it will become a real icon not only for Corwen and the Dee Valley but the Welsh nation as a whole.
“The statue depicts a fighting man, probably the image most people would associate with Glyndr, but there was much more to him than that.
“He united a nation under one figurehead, set up universities and a Welsh Parliament but more importantly, he gave its people hope.
“He was a great man and I feel this new statue goes some way to honouring his memory.”
The statue was created by sculptor Colin Spofforth, who went as far as researching the correct breed of horse Owain Glyndr would have ridden.
He said: “I would like to represent the many-faceted character of Glyndr in this sculpture.
“He was not only a man spurred on by his sense of independence and national pride, but also an academic, a nobleman and a brave warrior.”
Funding for the statue came from Denbighshire County Council, the Welsh Development Agency, the Wales Tourist Board, Ivor Williams Trailers, the Corwen Partnership and Lord Newborough of Rhug Estates.
A formal dedication ceremony is planned for later in the year.
