Taumarunui, a railway town, gained importance with the construction of the North Island Main Trunk Line in 1908 (celebrated in a famous old ballad by Peter Cape, "Taumarunui on the Main Trunk Line"). The town is situated about midway between Auckland and Wellington and was well-know for its "cup of tea stop", thick railway china, and meat pies.

Now there is a set of railway carriages parked on the narrow grass strip between the railway tracks and the main road in the heart of Taumarunui, as a thriving little Diner and Takeaway business, popular with locals and passing travellers, and skiers heading to the mountains.

The railway line south of Taumarunui caused considerable problems due to the terrain. The gradient between Taumarunui and National Park is steep - a rise of 132m over 2km, as it climbs up to the central plateau and has several high viaducts and the famous Raurimu Spiral.
