The mountainside is littered with slate from the old mines around Llanberis so the trees with a slate craving have no problem devouring it like this one has. The slate is well wedged into the tree at a rather peculiar angle when approaching up the footpath (which is also slate).
Nearby are the Dinorwig Slate Quarries and power station with the old Anglesey Barracks higher up where the miners used to reside.
