"Opposite Battery Park on Clinton St. is the former DELAWARE CITY HOTEL (private), later called the Lower Hotel, built of brick by Manuel Eyre in 1828 and since covered with buff stucco. This large and well-proportioned building with its delicate dormer windows is a monumental relic of Delaware City's early optimism. Until the advent of Prohibition it was one of the noted taverns of the countryside."

The Delaware City Hotel is certainly a reminder of this town's history. Sitting on the corner, highly visible from the Delaware River with it's white facade, it acts like a beacon to seafaring vessels.

The building stands just as it did when the lock at the beginning of the C&D Canal here, increased commerce and tourism. The hotel now houses the Crabby Dick's seafood restaurant downstairs.

There are two sets of photo cutouts here, both of 19th century clothed couples. I'll tell you, though, youmust be really tall to comfortably fit into the one I'm pictured is. I am literally on my very tip-toes to get my head through the cutout. Maybe people were taller in the 1800s.
