Similar to the Southernmost Point in the US marker in Key West, this buoy was set to mark the southernmost point in NJ. This was recently given to the City by the U.S. Coast Guard Aids to Navigation Team & stands about 10 feet high. The plaque attached to the base notes the coordinates as N 38°55'48" W 74°56'00" which are actually well west of this location (and a bit farther south) - near the west end of the Promenade (this may have been the intended original location of the buoy). Just to be sure - it would be best to visit both locations & be sure to walk south to the waters edge to cover all the bases!
