From the plaque at the Kasu Maru:
Kasu Maru memorial
The odyssey of the "Kasu Maru" has a mystic quality.
On September 25th 1985, Kazukio Sakamoto left Owase, Japan
for a day of fishing aboard his beloved "Kazu Maru".
Unfortunately he never returned.
A year and a half later the "Kazu Maru" was found adrift off the
Queen Charlotte Islands. When it was brought into Prince Rupert
to be identified, it was discovered that the boat was from the sister
city of Prince Rupert; Owase, Japan. The boat was lovingly restored
by people in Prince Rupert and placed on display.
This strange coincidence has served to bring the two cities closer
together. During the official opening of the Mariners Memorial
Park, Mrs. Sakamoto, members of her family and others visiting
from Owase, offered prayers and helped dedicate this memorial
to all those who have lost lost there lives in the Pacific Ocean.
