Prior to being a lawyer and US President, Abraham Lincoln was a surveyor. One of his most extensive surveys was the town of Petersburg, IL.

Lincoln settled in nearby New Salem, IL in 1831, and spent his time working as a shopkeeper, rail-splitter, postmaster and deputy surveyor before moving to Springfield in 1837 to become a lawyer, which would eventually elevate him to President of the United States.

Abraham Lincoln surveyed the city of Petersburg in 1836, laying out the town’s original 60 blocks.

Under this plaque is the original stone set by Abraham Lincoln as the initial point of beginning.
