EN: The origin of the building is unknown, but before 1080. It was an abbey then. In 1525 the city of Basel took over the complex; the church remained, but the rest of the buildings were secularized. In 1688 this was the place where craftsmen working for the public received their wages, that's where the name comes from ("Lohnhof" means "court of salary").
In 1821 the police took over and modified the building, then it became a prison until 1995.
In 1995 a new prison was built and this complex was free for new usage. Now there is a hotel, a restaurant, a theater, a musical instruments museum, and a daycare facility for children.
DE: Der Ursprung des Gebäudes ist unbekannt, jedoch vor 1080. Damals war es eine Abtei. 1525 übernahm die Stadt Basel den Komplex; Die Kirche blieb erhalten, aber der Rest der Gebäude wurde säkularisiert. Im Jahr 1688 erhielten hier Handwerker, die für die Öffentlichkeit arbeiteten, ihren Lohn, von daher stammt der Name.
1821 übernahm und modifizierte die Polizei das Gebäude, bis 1995 wurde es zu einem Gefängnis.
Im Jahr 1995 wurde ein neues Gefängnis eröffnet und dieser Komplex war für eine neue Nutzung frei. Heute gibt es hier ein Hotel, ein Restaurant, ein Theater, ein Musikinstrumentemuseum und eine Kindertagesstätte.
