The flag of the city of Basel (and also of the canton of Basel-Stadt) goes back to the symbol of the Prince-Bishopric of Basel, that apperead in the 11th century first on coins, later on seals and coats of arms. Since the 13th century, the crozier has its present form. In the 14th century, from the coat of arms of the prince-bishopric that had with a red crozier, the black version of the city was created, which was also maintained when the bishop was exiled from the city in 1529 after the Reformation.
The picture shows the flag at the city hall, which is the seat of the city and cantonal government.

Die Fahne der Stadt Basel (und auch des Kantons Basel-Stadt) geht auf das Symbol des Fürstbistums Basel zurück, dass seit dem 11. Jahrhundert auf Münzen, später auch auf Siegeln und Wappen. Seit dem 13. Jahrhundert hat der Stab seine heutige Form. Im 14. Jahrhundert entstand aus dem Wappen des Fürstbistums mit einem roten Stab die schwarze Version der Stadt, die auch beibehalten wurde als der Bischof nach der Reformation 1529 aus der Stadt bertrieben wurde.
Das Bild zeigt die Fahne am Rathaus, das der Sitz der Stadt- und Kantonsregierung ist.
