A favourite landmark on our trips to Taranaki, this old farm building in a remote area on the side of SH.3. going up the northern side of Mt Messenger in Taranaki, demands our attention with its important title.

This typical old green corrugated-iron barn in "the middle of nowhere", on the northern climb up Mt Messenger, has always attracted our attention for as long as we can remember. It is a familiar landmark, never changing, always looking exactly the same. Someone has assigned it the very important title "Mt Messenger Branch" of the National Bank, with the appropriate Bank sign of the black horse.

The old shed, typical of New Zealand country farm barns, stands alone on an isolated stretch of highway and seems to glow with self-pride. It's amazing what a difference an "official" sign can do to a little old tin barn!

Look out for it, you can't miss it, high on the ridge as you climb up Mt Messenger heading south.
Construction: Other

Is this a 'working' barn?: Equipment Shed (used to store farm implements)

Other:
This barn shed is typical of NZ farm sheds, used for hay, machinery, fencing materials, tractors and all sorts of miscellaneous stuff, but this one is also masquerading as a National Bank, and some farmer with a sense of humour has designated it the grand title of "Mt Messenger Branch".

Distinctive Features: Other (describe below)

Other Distinctive Features:
The sign has always been there and always catches our eye. We wonder how many other people passing by are attracted to this familiar landmark, a little green tin barn called "National Bank, Mt Messenger Branch". As you drive up Mt Messenger you can't miss it, on the right hand side of the road.
