The tree was planted on October 26, 1968 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Czechoslovak independence. Czechoslovakia was founded on October 28, 1918 after the break-up of the Austrian-Hungarian empire.
It is a lime-tree, lime being the traditional Slavic symbol.
