DE: "Der von Emil Faesch und Emanuel La Roche entworfene Bahnhof Basel SBB wurde am 24. Juni 1907 dem Betrieb übergeben.
Das Bahnhofsgebäude zeichnet sich durch seine ausserordentliche Länge aus, da auf seiner Westseite der Bahnhof Basel SNCF mit seiner Zollanlage für den internationalen Umsteigeverkehr «angehängt» ist.
Der asymmetrische Grundriss des Bahnhofs zeigt nach aussen das für die damalige Zeit repräsentative Aussehen der Bundesbauten. Die Innenräume sind weit und hoch gebaut. Das Aufnahmegebäude ist auf die Mittelachse des Centralbahnplatzes ausgerichtet und zeigt ein riesiges verglastes Tudorbogenfenster zwischen zwei Uhrtürmen unter geschweiften Hauben. Hinter der Fassade könnte man einen Kopfbahnhof vermuten, was aber in Basel nicht der Fall ist. Durch die Eingänge in den Uhrentürmen erreichen die Reisenden die Schalterhalle unter einer mit Holz ausgelegten Stahlbogenkonstruktion. Grosse Wandbilder aus den 1920er-Jahren werben für die touristischen Ziele in der Schweiz. Die Billet- und Geldwechselschalter sind in der platzseitigen Wand eingelassen. Früher fand man hier auch die Gepäckaufgabe und Handgepäckaufbewahrung, heute sind diese Nebenleistungen mittels Rolltreppe und Treppe im Untergeschoss zu finden. Im Ostteil befand sich an Stelle des jetzigen Reisezentrums die Gepäckausgabe. Im Flügel auf der Nordwestseite befanden sich die Restaurants erster/zweiter Klasse (jetzt Migros) sowie der dritten Klasse (jetzt Brasserie/Kiosk). Der Bahnhof war berühmt für seine Bahnhofbuffets. Diese wurden aber in den 1990er-Jahren schrittweise aufgegeben. Neben einem verbliebenen Spezialitätenrestaurant belegen nun andere kommerzielle Nutzungen die hohen, mit Wandgemälden verzierten Räume. Ein separater Eingang westlich des Centralplatzes an der Centralbahnstrasse führt zu den nach dem Elsass fahrenden Zügen im Bahnhof Basel der SNCF.
Über 1000 Personenzüge verkehren hier durchschnittlich pro Tag. Es gibt direkte Verbindungen nach allen Regionen der Schweiz und vielen wichtigen Destinationen im übrigen Europa."

The station building is distinguished by its extraordinary length, as the west side is an "attached" independent station run by the French SNCF. It is the terminal station for trains from France and considered French territory.
The asymmetrical layout of the station shows the typical representative appearance of federal buildings of its time. The interiors are built wide and high. The station building is aligned on the center line of Central Railway Square and shows a huge glazed Tudor arch window between two clock towers with cambered hoods. Behind the facade, one could suspect a head station, but this is not the case in Basel. Using the main entrances below the clock towers, travelers can reach the main hall under a timber lined steel arc design. Large murals from the 1920s promoting the tourist destinations in Switzerland. The ticket and money exchange offices are let into the side wall. Other sevices used to be there as well, but have moved to the basement in the late 1990s. The wing on the northwest side were the restaurants. The station was well-known for his station buffets. But these were gradually abandoned in the 1990s. In addition to a single left specialty restaurant now the the high rooms decorated with wall paintings are occupied by other commercial uses. A separate entrance west of the Central Square leads to the area of Basel SNCF for the trains to France.
