The monument was gifted to the City Of Warrnambool, by the Portuguese Government.
The monument is made of stone and an engraved;
'Assim fomos abrindo-aqueles mares, Que geracao alguma nao abriu'
(Canto V, Lusiadas Luis de Camoues)
The best free translation I can get is;
'Thus we were open-those seas, That generation some not opened'
There is also a small marble plaque embedded in the ground.
