This plow was undoubtedly pulled by a single cow and guided by the farmer. Before these metal plows, wooden ones of similar design were used. This area in North Jeolla Province is sometimes called the "Rice Bowl of Korea" and has been cultivated at least for 2,000 years.

This was a common site even twenty years ago. In 1970, I lived on in a village a few kilometers from this site and saw these plows being used. In fact, the small building I lived in, was half my room, and half that of the cow, who pulled one of these plows.

Though now mostly replaced by mechanized plows of various types, one can still see a cow pulling one of these in the remote countryside.
