This tower on Seonsan Mountain offers a commanding view of the city of Gimje, Korea, and the surrounding countryside, a premier rice cultivation for 2,000 years. Gimje has mushroomed from a small rural town to a city engulfing the county.

Just below this tower is a 530 year-old Zelkovia tree revered and protected as a natural treasure. At the base of the mountain is the Gimje Hyanggyo Daesengjeon, Historic Relic No. 482, a Confucian Shrine dating from 1400. The observation tower was completed in 1992.
I was especially glad to find this tower when I returned to Gimje after 35 years. The little farming town that I had known was now a full-fledged city that had grown to encompass the entire county. From this vantage point I was able to locate a hill in the distance to use as a landmark in my search for the tiny village where I had lived 35 years ago as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer. Eventually I did locate it about three miles (5 km) south of town, and had a happy reunion with my host family, still in the same house after all these years.
