Jefferson City’s high school football venue, was a dimly illuminated grass turf stadium built before the start of World War II. Over the years it received small improvements to that original Public School Stadium, but in September 2008 the sports complex got a major face-lift that included: new artificial turf field with improved water drainage system; new and expanded concrete stands; modern lighting; modern sound system; modern running track; new fencing and security features. The stadium was named in 1992 for legendary coach John V. “Pete” Adkins while he was still coaching. He retired from coaching the team in 1994 with a perfect season and another state high school championship. He even had a country rock singer record a video to promote her new song “Breathe”. The video was dedicated to coach Adkins, his staff and his players in 2003 by artist Melissa Etheridge and can be seen on Youtube. The new track that surrounds the football field is being named for Dennis and Roberta Licklider-- track & field coaches who are retiring this year. Their record includes 39 district championships, nine state championships and a dual meet record of 231 wins, 5 losses for their track and field Jay teams. That is almost legendary too!
