This stamp depicts the beautiful symbol of Ouistreham's harbour - lighthouse (Le phare d'Ouistreham). The present lighthouse, that replaced other means of signs and markings, was built in 1905.
The lighthouse is equipped with 171 steps and it is 38 me tall. Its white light has a range of or 29.65 km and the red one that marks the danger of the rocks of the Calvados has a range of 14 km. The lamp, fitted with a Fresnel lens, is a fixed light that is fed by a 650 W halogen lamp. The lighthouse was fully computerized in 1993.
