This arboretum was founded by the Grand Duke Friedrich I. who was particularly fond of rare woody plants from all over the world. Already in 1853 the first exotic trees arrived on the Isle of Mainau. In the following decades this collection was expanded and tended. Today the tree collection comprises more than 500 different sorts of deciduous trees and conifers.

Already a first glance at the arboretum pleases the expert´s eye: Giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) and Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), originally native to California, are among the first of their kind to arrive in Europe by the middle of the 19th century.
There are cedars from the snow-free regions of the Atlas Mountains (Cedrus atlantica and cedrus atlantica glauca), deodar cedars (C. deodara), incense cedars (Libocedrus decurrens) and various kinds of Japanese cypresses (Chamaecyparis).
Then we find Western Redcedar (Thuja plicata), the very rare California Nutmeg (Torreya californica), several sorts of fir trees (Abies gigantea, A. pinsapo, A. nordmanniana, A. caphalonica) and pine trees (Picea). Magnolia (Magnolia) and Japanese ornamental Cherry trees (Prunus) give a nice touch of colour.
We can also find some splendid specimen of the Dove Tree (Davidia involucrata), beech trees (Fagus), linden trees (Tilia), plane trees (Platanus x bispanica), oak trees (Quercus), walnut trees (Juglans), Katsuratrees (Ceridiphyllum japonicum), Southern catalpa (Catalpa bignonioides), sometimes with sweeping trail woods.
