The Big Obsidian Flow trail includes this stairway which climbs up onto the Big Obsidian Flow in Newberry Crater at the summit of Newberry Volcano.
Newberry Volcano is larger in both area and volume than any the major Cascade Peaks of Oregon. It covers an area of over 500 square miles, has an eruptive volume of at least 110 cubic miles, and has been active for the last half million year. Newberry Crater, a 17 square mile caldera, occupies the summit region of Newberry Volcano and formed about 80,000 years ago. Since then numerous eruptions have partially filled the caldera. The 1300 year old Big Obsidian Flow is the most recent eruption.
