In 1889, to celebrate the 100 years of George Washington's inauguration as president of the United States, a large provisory Memorial Arch was erected over Fifth Avenue just north of the Washington Square Park.

The 23 m high Arch was then commissioned in white marble and completed in its current location (Fifth Avenue and Washington Square North) in 1892. The public itself raised the money for the Arch and it was considered a big success.

On the Arch you can also find 13 wreath-encircled stars near the top of the Arch, one for each original state, alternating with “W” for Washington. Also the two Washington's sculptures on each side of the Arch are very interesting.
