Longhurst and Skinner were a furnishing company. The advert reads as follows:
'Longhurst & Skinner, Complete House Furnishers, Midland Road, Bedford
The Bedford Pantechnicon, Bedford
Longhurst & Skinner's
Premises shown in the above view are undoubtedly one of the most imposing buildings in the Furnishing Trade out of London and form a notable attraction to visitors to Bedford. It is necessary to pay a visit of inspection to these premises to realise the vast extent of their numerous showrooms. So varied is the stock that it is possible to absolutely purchase every household requisite to completely furnish any size residence without leaving Longhurst & Skinner's premises.

Before Longhurst & Skinner acquired the building from 1897 J C Denton occupied the Bedford Pantechnicon. In 1912 a fire destroyed the old building on 11th January and it was changed to the one we see today whilst still being owned and used by Longhurst & Skinner. H W Longhurst was the Mayor of the town in 1909 and his son Henry Longhurst was a well known golfer.
Today the premises is owned by J.D. Wetherspoon as the public house The Pilgrim's Progress: (
