Where were you on 9-11?
I was in Oregon visiting friends and we had gotten up extra early to drive back to SeaTac for our flight home. We flipped on CNN while eating breakfast and saw the fire in the first building. As we watched, we saw the second plane hit the other tower and with horror we realized that these were no accidents that this was an attack.
On our way to the airport (a few hours drive) we listened to the radio of the coverage and again we were horrified to hear that one of the towers collapsed. 15 minutes later the other tower collapsed.
We reminiced on our memories. I grew up in New York and I remember being 7 years old and looking across Jamacia Bay and watching the towers being built. I had visited them many times and I even asked my wife to marry me on top of one of the towers and we had dinner at Windows on the World that night.
During our trip back, we learned that the entire United States air traffic was being shut down and we would not be able to fly home. We had already decided that we were not going to fly anyway due to concerns about terrorist attacks on the west coast.
We drove on to Seattle anyway and fortunately we had a friend's place where we could crash. We didn't expect to be stuck there for a whole week waiting for the planes to fly again! Finally we were able to secure a stand-by spot on the first flight out of SeaTac. I remember speaking to many other people that had been living in a Red Cross shelter for a week because they had no money and no where else to stay. We carefully looked over the others who would be on our flight assessing their terrorist potential...
While we waited for a flight home, we learned that one of my best friends was at work in Tower 1 that fateful morning. He was stuck on one of the topmost floors and had no way to descend since the staircases were destroyed. He and his co-workers were awaiting rescue that never came. He was able to call his wife briefly and he realized that he was not going to make it. He said goodbye to her and told her to tell his 3 children how much he loves them. His name was Anthony Perez and his remains were never found.
