Containing the finest collection of aircraft and space vehicles in the world, a visit to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum is a must do event. Upon entry, you will be in the Milestones of Space hall. Here you will see the space and aircraft that set many world records or were the first to do something of its type.
- Mercury Friendship 7 - First American to Orbit the Earth
- Gemini IV - First American to perform a spacewalk
- Apollo 11 - First Manned Lunar Landing
- Spirit of St. Louis - First Nonstop Solo Transatlantic Flight
- North American X-15 - First Hypersonic Flights
- Voyager - First non-stop, non-refueled flight around the world
- SpaceShip One - First Privatley developed piloted vehicle to reach space
- Brietling Orbiter 3 - First non-stop flight around the world in a balloon
And this is just the entry hall. The museum is more that just a collection of Airplanes. It will also teach you about many aspects of flight or flight related items. There are currentley galleries containing time periods such as World War I, World War II, Carrier Operations, Flight to the Moon, How does an airplane work, the Missile garden and of course, the Wright Flyer.
The collection it largely in storage due to the amount of items that is owned, but this means that the exhibit galleries change regularly. There is too much to place here. You will just have to visit it yourself.
