The headquarters and ranger station to the Blue Hills Reservation is located at 695 Hillside Avenue, near the boundary line between Milton and Quincy and is near the State Police Barracks. Visiting this location is not required, since no fee is charged to hike in the park. It is one of the stopping points to get maps, news and activity information. The building, which looks like a house, is situated next to a dirt fire road used as hiking trails.

There are two parking lots. One is a pull off and one is a slightly larger lot down the street. From there, it is a short walk up a road, passing by the old horse stables to the Massachusetts State Police.

Blue Hills Reservation has over 7000 acres of land that stretches from Quincy to Dedham and includes land in the town of Milton and Canton. The park encompasses a low range of hills that includes Great Blue Hill that has an elevation of 635 ft. Activities possible in the park include hiking, swimming, animal exhibits, skiing, and a historic weather observatory.

Rangers are found throughout the park to provide help to hikers, conduct various maintenance, and other activities. Currently, the rangers are part of the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Reservation (Mass. DCR). The park was formerly part of the Metropolitan District Commission, which was a network of urban parks and waterworks holdings around the Boston metropolitan area.
