The museum originated as storefront on Main Street Skokie. Skokie is a largely jewish section of Chicago. Bill Clinton was the keynote speaker at the opening.

Ehibits include a German rail car and a youth exhibit designed for children 8-11 years old. Plus, The Legacy of Absence Gallery "focuses on the feelings of sadness and loss that continue in the shadow of the Holocaust and other modern genocides". The Room of Remembrance pays homage to the 6 million victims of the Holocaust. Representative names of victims line the walls.
