The carillon consists of 40 Meissen porcelain bells. It was built in 1933 and originally had only 24 bells. Although the whole city, including the palace of Zwinger, was badly damaged by the 1945 bombing, the carillon survived unharmed.
Today, it plays at every quarter hour a melody composed by Günter Schwarze. On occasions you can hear other famous melodies.
