The castle Strekov is a Gothic castle standing on the cliff above the Elbe river in town Ustí nad Labem. It was founded in 1319 by the Czech nobleman Pešek of Strekov who received the permission from John of Luxembourg (Jan Lucemburský in Czech), the King of Bohemia. During the following five centuries the castle changed hands several times. The owners were German noblemen and Czechs like Václav Popel of Lobkovice.
The first tourists started to visit this romantic castle, coming with the steamships and railway, in the the second half of 19th century. The first pub appeared in the castle in 1810 and later a hotel was built. Many artists were attracted to this historical place. Among those who spent their holidays at Strekov were Czech poet Karel Hynek Macha and famous German composer Richard Wagner who prepared here the opera Tannhauser.
From the castle ramparts is a great view of the whole Elbe (Labe)river valley and the city...
