The royal town of Louny on the border of Central and Northern Bohemia was erected on the neck of land above the River Ohre in the 13th century during the reign of the Czech King Premysl Otakar II. Today we can still see a beautiful line of city fortification with bastions and a Zatec gate, which encompass the whole centre of the town. The current presence of the Louny fortification is, however, a result o gradual Gothic reconstruction in the second half of the 15th century.
The late-Gothic Žatec Gate (In Czech: Zatecká brána) built in 1500 and modified in 1842 with the city crest as a frontpiece, is extraordinary example of medieval fortification architecture.
