Located on Hartlepool’s historic Headland the now Grade II listed building was the gift of billionaire international philanthropist Andrew Carnegie.
Robinson John Marshall was the original contractor for the building's construction in 1903 and it was built as a public library and museum.
It served as Northgate Branch Library until 1999 when it closed when the library moved to the Borough Buildings in Middlegate.
It remained closed until work started in 2005 on a million pound restoration project and over the course of a year, the building's original features were carefully restored and preserved, including the wood panelling, mosaic flooring, stained glass windows and rare pitch pine doorframes.
It’s official re-opening was on June 15 June 2006 and it now houses part of Hartlepool Council's Libraries staff and is also home to the Council's Sports Development Team.
