Stanley Jefferson was born in 1890 in Ulverston. He moved to the USA where he formed a partnership with Oliver Hardy. A partnership that was to last for 31 years. Making some 106 films, including Sons of the Desert.
The statue is central to Ulverston's regeneration plans.

The artist, graham Ibbeson is also responsible for the statues of Eric Morecambe and Les Dawson. He is the master of the bronze.
