There has been church on this site since Anglo-Saxon times and presumably a churchyard with it. The churchyard is enclosed by a coped stone rubble wall. There are a large number of tombstones still standing and amoungst them several interesting chest tombs dating from the 17th century. One interesting grave is that of Thomas Maude who died in 1798. Thomas had been a surgeon onboard HMS Harfleur and it was he who, in 1771, wrote the poem "Wensleydale or Rural Contemplations" with the proceeds going to help support Leeds Infirmary. Whilst wandering through the churchyard watch your step as the place is infested with rabbits and their holes.
