The tree growth ring has many labels documenting history over the years and lies hidden away amongst the Rhododendrons and Azaleas in Exbury Gardens.

There is a record of the tree being planted by the Mitford family in the 1720s then it was felled during the great storm of 1990. This information is kindly available from Exbury Gardens as is the list of the labels displayed on the tree below:
